Establishing a Workplace That Defines Employee Responsibilities and Fosters Better Patient Care

December 2008

Steve Paskoff and Tucker Miller of ELI® were recently featured in the “The Physician’s Report” by Physicians Insurance Agency. The following is an excerpt from the Winter 2008 issue.

Building and maintaining a healthy work environment requires participation from all facets of the organization, and like most organization-wide initiatives, it has to start with the leadership. When clinic leaders set the tone for workplace culture, employees will always model their own behavior after the examples set at the top—regardless of whether those examples are consistent with stated policies and values.

To create a professional, legal, and ethical workplace culture, clinic management must set the standard for others: First, in their own daily conduct; second, by communicating it regularly and credibly as a required performance expectation; third, by consistently reinforcing key principles.
