Business Culture: A Part of the Job

Stephen M. Paskoff, Esq. (President) Posted on 05-09-2008 at 11:57 AM

A few months ago, I was speaking to a client who told me there had been incidents of bad practices and ethical issues arising in her workplace. She was frustrated because people seemed unwilling to go beyond the confines of their job responsibilities and report these kinds of problems. She wondered what would it take to get people to go beyond their jobs. I thought about how to answer her and realized that the problem was the question: that is, the question should not be how can we get people to go beyond their job but rather how can we get people to recognize that reporting problems is part of their job. The only way to do that is to work on developing corporate citizenship as an element of culture and responsiblity. When problems arise, it's a responsibility of employment to the organization, to co-workers, and, at times, to the public to raise issues.  Not doing so isn't an unwillingness to go beyond the job; it's a failure to do the job in the first place.
